The term responsible development is used widely in our industry, and can mean different things to different businesses.
At ARC, we understand responsible development as our commitment to develop our assets and operate our business in a manner that protects the health and safety of our employees, communities and the environment. ARC’s culture of innovation and entrepreneurialism, works in tandem with responsible development as we continuously seek ways to make our operations safer, more efficient and to minimize our impact on the environment. A focus on responsible development is smart business as it allows us to realize both economic and social performance goals. We approach these commitments with the same discipline as we do all areas of our business, as we understand that strong corporate responsibility is vital to our success.
ARC’s culture of innovation and entrepreneurialism, works in tandem with responsible development as we continuously seek ways to make our operations safer, more efficient and to minimize our impact on the environment.
Our highest priority is safety. We strive to create a culture where safety is top of mind and where an open dialogue exists to facilitate continual improvements. In 2013, we held our tenth annual safety workshop, bringing together employees and contractors to exchange ideas on how we can make our operations safer. At the beginning of 2013, we set the goal to increase field visits by management, and I am pleased to report that we met our objective increasing visits by 18 per cent. Across our operations we target zero lost time incidents. During the year, unfortunately two lost time incidents occurred. We will continue to work on reaching our goal of zero incidents.
In 2013, ARC once again proved to be a leader in environmental performance with the application of new technology and innovative solutions that reduce our overall impact on air, land and water. Initiatives such as multi-well pad development and low emissions technology resulted in a minimized operational footprint and increased operational efficiencies. We received public recognition with the 2013 CAPP Responsible Canadian Energy Chair’s Award for the low emissions design of our Dawson gas plant, a #1 ranking in the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) Canada 200 Leadership Index, and inclusion in the Corporate Knights Future 40 Most Responsible Corporate Leaders in Canada. Although external recognition is not the goal of our responsible development practices, this recognition serves as both validation of our efforts and, more importantly, a benchmark by which we will continue to measure our work.
Investment in responsible development is how we create sustainable value for our shareholders, employees and stakeholders, and it will continue to be a principle commitment in our operations.
